A

American roulette: American roulette is a casino game that features a wheel with 38 numbered pockets, including 0 and 00. Players place bets on where they think a ball will land when the American roulette wheel stops spinning. American roulette wheels include a higher house edge (5.26%) than other variants.

B

Bankroll: Refers to the amount of money that a player sets aside specifically for gambling, such as betting in casinos or other games of chance like roulette.

Bet: Refers to a wager placed on the table layout.

Betting system: Refers to a structured approach or strategy that a player uses to place bets, aiming to manage their wagers and potential losses or maximise their chances of winning.

Biased wheel: Refers to a roulette wheel where the ball favours certain numbers or sections due to a defect. This roulette wheel may lead to a non-random distribution of winning numbers over time.

Block bet: Refers to a wager that covers a group or “block” of numbers on the betting layout. It is a bet that covers multiple adjacent numbers and provides a higher chance of winning but with a lower payout than bets on individual numbers.

C

Call bets: Refers to special types of bets made by verbally announcing the desired bet to the dealer rather than placing chips directly on the betting layout. These bets are common in European and French roulette and cover specific combinations of numbers on the wheel.

Column bet: A column bet is a wager placed on one of the three vertical columns of numbers on the betting layout. The column bet covers all the numbers in the chosen column.

Combination bet: Refers to a wager that covers multiple numbers on the betting layout, such as betting on a combination of individual numbers, adjacent numbers, or other specific groups of numbers.

Corner bet: The corner bet refers to a wager placed on a group of four numbers that form a square on the betting layout. The bet is made by placing chips at the intersection where the four numbers meet.

Croupier: Refers to the casino employee responsible for facilitating the game. The croupier operates the roulette wheel, spins the ball, handles bets, and pays out winnings to the players.

D

Double-zero roulette: Refers to American roulette, which has a double-zero pocket and, therefore, a higher house edge compared to other roulette games.

Dozen bet: A dozen bet is a wager placed on one of three groups of 12 numbers each on the betting layout. Players can place a dozen bet on the first dozen (numbers 1-12), second dozen (numbers 13-24), or third dozen (numbers 25-36).

E

En Plein: A French phrase which refers to a bet placed on a single, specific number on the betting layout.

En Prison: A rule that applies to even-money bets (Blac or Red bet, Even or Odd bet) when the ball lands on the green pocket (0). Instead of losing the entire bet, the bet remains “in prison” for the next spin. If the player wins on the next spin, they get their original bet back; if not, the bet is lost.

European roulette: European roulette is a version of roulette where the roulette wheel has 37 numbered pockets, including only one zero pocket coloured in green. European roulette typically offers better odds for players compared to American roulette with its single-zero format.

Even-money bet: Also known as even-money wagers, even-money bets refer to a wager placed on options that have approximately a 50% chance of winning, such as betting on red/black, odd/even, or high/low numbers. An even-money bet pays out 1:1, meaning the player wins an amount equal to their original bet if they are successful.

F

French roulette: French roulette is a variation of the roulette table game similar to European roulette, featuring a roulette wheel with 37 numbered pockets, including one green pocket marked as “0.” It includes the “La Partage” rule, where players receive half their bet back if the ball lands on the green pocket (0).

H

High bet: Refers to a wager placed on the group of numbers from 19 to 36 on the roulette layout.

Hot table: Refers to roulette tables where players have been experiencing a streak of winning bets or good fortune. It is a subjective term and often used to describe a table that seems to be more profitable but not necessarily so.

House edge: The house edge refers to the mathematical advantage that the casino has over players. The house edge represents the percentage of each bet that the casino expects to win in the long run, with the remaining percentage being the player’s expected return.

I

Inside bets: An inside bet refers to wagers placed on specific numbers or small groups of numbers within the betting layout. An Inside bet has a higher payout but lower odds of winning than an Outside bet.

L

La Partage: Refers to a rule that applies to even-money wagers (e.g., red/black, odd/even) when the ball lands on the green pocket (0). Instead of losing the entire bet, you will receive half your bet back. It reduces the house edge on even-money wagers in games like French roulette.

Line bet: A line bet is a wager placed on two adjacent rows of numbers on the betting layout, covering six numbers in total.

Low bet: Refers to a wager placed on the group of numbers from 1 to 18 on the betting layout.

M

N

Number bet: Refers to a bet on one number from the many numbers on the layout.

O

Odd bet: Refers to a wager placed on all the odd numbers on the betting layout. It covers half of the numbers and offers a higher chance of winning with a 1:1 payout.

Outside bet: An outside bet refers to wagers placed on larger groups of numbers on the betting layout. Outside bets pay lower than Inside bets but have higher odds of winning.

Orphans: Refers to a French bet that covers a specific group of numbers on the wheel: 1, 6, 9, 14, 17, 20, 31, and 34. These aren’t adjacent numbers on the layout of the table.

Orphelins: The French term for “orphans.”

P

Pocket: Refers to each individual compartment on the roulette wheel where the ball can land after a spin. After the ball is spun, it ends up in a pocket. Each pocket is numbered, and the players place their bets on these numbers or other betting options on the betting layout corresponding to the pockets on the wheel.

Q
